THE HIDDEN LÄND | shaping space with light
Designing with light for the archaeological exhibition ‘THE HIDDEN LAND’ in the Kunstgebäude Stuttgart.
Supervised by the design lead of Simon Neßler and the Archäologisches Landesmuseum Baden-Württemberg, we co-developed the scenography for the archaeological exhibition ‘THE HIDDEN LÄND’ together with the Austrian Studio VERDANDI.
In the further execution, Studio Julian Hölscher developed the content for the projections of the central installations and installed them with the media technicians from LYNX Media Systems GmbH.
Exhibitions today have to tell more than just the truth
The aim of the exhibition was not to postulate a one-dimensional truth. The spatial staging of the sites was therefore not modelled in a naturalistic, realistic way, but rather elevated to a degree of abstraction. This formal style has given the staging of the stories and exhibits the necessary space needed to frame them, free from already worn-out images.
Any understanding of an era is always subject to the interpretation of current events. Our view of history is changing. It is our task to incorporate this insight into exhibition design and not only to provide information in museums, but also to create a space for interpretation.
Over the course of our year-long collaboration, Dr Gabriele Graenert and Dr Felix Hillgruber taught me a lot about the fascinating history of our ancestors. Many thanks also to Ingmar Varain and Jonas Lang in Bremen and the Studio VERDANDI team, led by Uwe Neuhold, Brigitte Wehiger and Peter Brandstätter in Salzburg.
